The Board of Directors and the Trustees of Medicina Alternativa express their sincere thanks to the delegates from all continents who attended the World Congress of Integrated Medicines held in Colombo in November 2005. Over 644 delegates by participating honoured the life and work of the late Prof. Anton Jayasuriya.
The next World Congress of Integrated Medicines is scheduled in Colombo between 26th and 29th November 2006. Theme will be Integrated Medicines for the New Millennium. The programme will consist of specialized segments on Rheumatology, Sports Medicines, Traditional and Natural Medicines, Acupuncture, Ayurveda, Allopathy and Homoeopathy. Highly renowned and qualified specialist will be conducting teaching segments related to their particular disciplines.

The International Trustees of Medicina Alternativa (Government registration No. 432/38585) unanimously voted to invite Prof. Dr. Githanjan Mendis M.B.B.S., M.D., F.R.C.P.(Edin), F.R.C.P.(Lond), F.C.C.P., Consultant in Neurology, Director of Sports Medicine to be a Trustee.
Prof. Mendis brings with him a wealth of medical and clinical experiences to help formulate the future objectives of Medicina Alternativa and The Open International University for Complementary Medicines.

The Board of Directors of The Open International University for Complementary Medicines has invited Dr. Masanaka Watanabe M.D. of Japan to be the patron of The Open International University for Complementary Medicines.
This resolution was voted in favour by the Trustees of Medicina Alternativa and the Governing Board of The Open International University for Complementary Medicines.
Dr. Masanaka Watanabeis a specialist in Internal Medicine. His specialty is related to Colon Surgery and related diseases.

The attendance on an average exceeds over 140 patients seeking treatment daily. All treatment is free of cost to the patients. Medicina Alternativa Trustees provide the full funding for staff, medical support and treatment medications. Four fully qualified (M.D.´s) doctors specializing in Traditional Medicines work from Monday to Saturday.
Medicina Alternativa and The Open International University for Complementary Medicines has entered into a contractual educational agreement with the liaison officials of the European Union. Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena M.D., Member of Parliament has been instrumental in formulating the Minute of Understanding. The basis of which, relates to a minimum of 12 students from diverse European communities be registered to follow the monthly clinical training programme. A large member of European countries have accepted the educational credentials of Medicina Alternativa and The Open International University for Complementary Medicines as fulfilling the practical requirements to satisfy the clinical placements which are mandatory for medical students.

The above two members who had supported Medicina Alternativa and The Open International University for Complementary Medicines had submitted their resignation. The Board of Directors passed a vote of thanks for their generous time and contribution towards the cause and propagation of alternative medicines.
The Ayurveda Faculty
CommencingMarch 18th 2006, this faculty will commence the teaching of the Ayurveda programmme.
Over 42 candidates applied for placements, 12 were selected as participants. Procedures have been instituted to confirm to the curriculum established by the Faculty of Ayurveda of the Government of Sri Lanka. Where upon completion of the course successful candidates will be given government approved qualification after an examination.

A website was launched for information related to the activities of Medicina Alternativa and The Open International University for Complementary Medicines.
The Ministry of Health in a recent pronouncement indicated the valuable contribution that Traditional Medicines especially Acupuncture is playing within the health services. It was recognized that Medicina Alternative and The Open International University for Complementary Medicines had been instrumental in promoting the cause of alternative medicines worldwide.

Many persons claim that they are the inheritors of the legal status to both these institutions.
(A) Medicina Alternativa is a registered legal Trust No. 432 where the Deed of Trust incorporates the registered Medicina Alternativa. Any claim or violation or use of the registered name of the Trust without the sanction, approval of the Trustees can be subjected to legal action.
(B) The Open International University for Complementary Medicines charter was granted or August 10th 1962 and 1975. It is a part and parcel of the Medicina Alternativa Trust. Since, 1975 teaching and certification has been conducted. The University Grant Commission has acknowledged the functioning parameters of both there institutions.
Any attempt by any person to use the Trade Marks/Trade Name (Logos) of both the said legally formed institutions will constitute a violation of the proprietary rights and would be an unlawful act in terms of the provisions of the Intellectual Property Act No. 36 of 2003 to which Sri Lanka is a signatory.
It is unfortunate that a number of ambitions persons claiming all sorts of credentials are trying to organize Congresses for their own benefit.
It is of interest to publicize a section of the constitution of Medicina Alternative and The Open International University for Complementary Medicines. Section Z page 3 outlines that all appointments are in force only for a period of three years whether explicitly stated or not, affiliations will terminate or lapse on the departure of the Dean of Clinical Studies/Chancellor/Chairman, or for cause.
All appointments which do not carry any remuneration or monetary compensation falls under section Z of the constitution. The appointments so specified are Vice Chancellors/Hon. Faculty Members.
